Chapter One

A New Beginning

The morning light filtered through the curtains, casting long amber streaks across the wooden floor. She sat at the desk, pen in hand, and began to write the words she had carried with her for a lifetime.

There was no going back now β€” only forward, into the unknown territory of truth. The pen felt heavier than it should, as though the weight of every unspoken word pressed into her fingertips.

Outside, the birds had begun their chorus. A thrush sat on the garden wall, its throat pulsing with song. She paused, listening, then turned back to the blank page.

"Begin at the beginning," she whispered to herself, and so she did.

The house on Elm Street had been her grandmother's before it was her mother's, and her mother's before it was hers. Three generations of women had pressed their palms against the cool plaster walls, had watched the same sun track across the kitchen floor.

Book Title

She remembered the summer of 1987 most vividly β€” the year the garden wall collapsed and they discovered the tin box buried beneath the honeysuckle. Inside were letters, dozens of them, written in a hand she did not recognise.

Her grandmother had taken the box without a word and carried it upstairs. For three days, the old woman had not come down. When she finally appeared at the kitchen table, her eyes were red but her voice was steady.

"Some stories," she said, pouring tea with the careful precision of someone holding themselves together, "are not meant to be told. They are meant to be lived, and then they are meant to be let go."

But Eleanor had never been good at letting go. It was both her greatest strength and her most persistent failing. She held onto memories the way other people held onto possessions β€” carefully, stubbornly, and with an irrational fear that without them she might cease to exist entirely.

The letters had disappeared after that. She searched for them, quietly, over the years that followed β€” checking the attic, the locked drawer in the bureau, the shoe boxes stacked in the spare room wardrobe. They were never found.

Now, forty years later, sitting at this same desk where her grandmother had once sat, Eleanor understood something she had not understood as a girl.
